How to Remove Password from PDF for Free (Without Uploading It)

How to remove password from a PDF file for free

Bank statements, salary slips, e-Aadhaar, insurance policies and credit card bills often arrive as password-protected PDFs. Typing the password every time is annoying, and many upload portals reject protected files. The good news: if you know the password, removing it takes less than a minute, for free, without installing anything.

Important: these methods are for removing the password from your own documents when you already know the password. They don't crack unknown passwords.

Method 1: Chrome or Edge (Windows, Mac, Android)

This is the fastest free method and works on almost every computer.

  1. Right-click the PDF and open it with Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge (or drag it into a browser window).
  2. Enter the password when asked.
  3. Press Ctrl + P (Cmd + P on Mac) to open the print window.
  4. Set the destination to Save as PDF (in Edge, Microsoft Print to PDF also works).
  5. Click Save and choose a new file name.

The new file opens without a password. On Android, open the PDF in Chrome or Google Drive, use Share > Print, and choose Save as PDF.

Note: "printing" creates a fresh copy, so links and bookmarks inside the PDF may not be kept, and the text may become harder to copy in some files. For normal statements and certificates, it works perfectly.

Method 2: Mac Preview

  1. Open the PDF in Preview and enter the password.
  2. Choose File > Export as PDF (or File > Export).
  3. Make sure Encrypt is unticked under the options, and save.

Method 3: Adobe Acrobat Pro

If you have the paid Acrobat Pro, open the file, go to All tools > Protect a PDF (or File > Properties > Security), and choose Remove security or set the security method to No Security. Save the file. This keeps everything in the PDF intact, including links and form fields. The free Acrobat Reader can't do this.

Method 4: Command line with qpdf (IT pros, batch files)

For many files at once, the free open-source tool qpdf is ideal and keeps the PDF exactly as it was:

qpdf --password=YOURPASSWORD --decrypt locked.pdf unlocked.pdf

On Windows you can install it with winget install QPDF.QPDF. Avoid putting real passwords in scripts you share.

Common PDF password formats

  • e-Aadhaar: the first four letters of your name in CAPITAL letters followed by your year of birth (YYYY). For example, AMIT1990.
  • Bank statements and credit card bills: each bank uses its own format, often a mix of your name, date of birth, customer ID or the last digits of your card or mobile number. It's written in the email that came with the statement, or on the bank's website.
  • Salary slips and Form 16: usually your PAN or employee ID, as set by your employer or payroll provider.

Is it safe to use online "PDF unlock" websites?

Most online unlock tools ask you to upload the file and type the password on their website. For bank statements, Aadhaar or salary documents, that means sharing your most sensitive data with a third party. Methods 1 to 4 work entirely on your own device, so prefer them.

After unlocking, you can merge, split or convert the file privately with our free PDF Tools and PDF to Word converter, which also run entirely in your browser. See our guide on merging PDF files for free.

Owner password vs. open password

  • Open (user) password: needed to open the file at all. The methods above remove it once you enter it.
  • Permissions (owner) password: the file opens normally but printing, copying or editing is blocked. Acrobat Pro or qpdf can remove these restrictions if you're the owner; Chrome's print method won't work if printing is blocked.

Keep your unlocked files safe

  • Store unlocked statements in a secure folder or encrypted drive, not on a shared desktop. On Windows, BitLocker protects the whole drive.
  • Don't email unlocked bank documents; send the original protected PDF and share the password separately.
  • Delete old unlocked copies you no longer need.

FAQ

Can I remove a PDF password without knowing it?

No. These methods require the password. If you've forgotten it, ask the sender (your bank, employer or UIDAI) for a fresh copy or the password format.

How do I remove the password from a PDF on my phone?

On Android, open it in Chrome or Google Drive, enter the password, then use Print and choose Save as PDF. On iPhone, open it in the Files app, enter the password, then use Share > Print, pinch outward on the preview to open it as a new PDF, and save it to Files.

Does removing the password reduce the PDF quality?

The print method may slightly change the file, but text and images stay sharp. Acrobat Pro and qpdf keep the original file exactly as it was.
