How to Merge PDF Files for Free (Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android)

Merging PDF files on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android: free tool, no upload

You have three PDFs (a bank statement, an ID scan and a form) and the portal only accepts one file. Merging PDFs is one of the most common office tasks, yet many people still upload private documents to random websites to do it.

This guide shows the fastest free ways to merge PDF files on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, including a method that never uploads your files anywhere.

Quick answer

  • Any device (no upload): use our free PDF Tools page. Add files, arrange the order, click Merge PDFs.
  • Mac: use the built-in Preview app.
  • iPhone/iPad: use the Files app's Create PDF option.
  • Windows and Android: there's no built-in merge option, so use a browser-based tool that works offline.

Method 1: Merge PDFs in your browser without uploading (Windows, Android, any device)

Our PDF Tools page runs entirely inside your browser. The files are processed on your own device and are never sent to a server, which matters for Aadhaar cards, bank statements, tax forms or medical reports.

  1. Open techyami.blogspot.com/p/pdf-tools.html in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
  2. Stay on the Merge PDF tab and click the Choose PDF files box (or drag your files onto it). Select all the PDFs you want to combine.
  3. Use the up and down arrows to put the files in the right order.
  4. Click Merge PDFs. The combined file downloads automatically.

The same page can also split a PDF, turn JPG or PNG photos into a PDF and convert PDF pages to JPG, so you can, for example, turn phone photos of documents into one PDF before merging.

Method 2: Merge PDFs on a Mac with Preview

  1. Open the first PDF in Preview.
  2. Choose View > Thumbnails to show the page sidebar.
  3. Drag the other PDF files from Finder into the sidebar, dropping them where they should appear.
  4. Drag thumbnails to reorder pages, or press Delete to remove a page.
  5. Choose File > Export as PDF and save the combined document with a new name.

Tip: exporting to a new file keeps your original PDFs untouched.

Method 3: Merge PDFs on iPhone or iPad with the Files app

  1. Open the Files app and go to the folder that contains your PDFs (save them there first from Mail or WhatsApp if needed).
  2. Tap the more (…) button, then Select, and tap each file in the order you want.
  3. Tap more (…) at the bottom, then Create PDF.
  4. A new combined PDF appears in the same folder. Rename it by long-pressing it.

This also works with photos: select images and PDFs together and they're combined into one document.

Method 4: Windows without extra software

Windows 11 and 10 can print to PDF but can't combine existing PDFs. Rather than installing a heavy PDF editor (or a free one bundled with adware), use Method 1 in Microsoft Edge or Chrome. If you already pay for Adobe Acrobat (not the free Reader), its Combine Files tool works too.

Method 5: Android

Android also has no built-in merge option. Open the PDF Tools page in Chrome, tap the Choose PDF files box and pick the PDFs from your Downloads or Drive. The merged file is saved to your Downloads folder.

Is it safe to merge PDFs on online websites?

Many popular "free PDF" websites upload your file to their servers. Most are legitimate, but you are trusting a third party with the document and you can't see how long it's stored. For anything containing ID numbers, bank details, salary slips or health information, prefer:

  • a tool that works offline in your browser (like ours),
  • a built-in app (Preview, Files), or
  • software installed by your organization.

Also avoid sites that ask you to install an extension or "download a converter" to finish the job.

Common problems and fixes

"This PDF is password protected"

Encrypted PDFs (common for bank statements and e-statements) must be unlocked first. Open the file with its password in your browser or PDF reader, choose Print > Save as PDF, and merge the new copy.

The merged file is too large to upload

Scanned pages are usually the culprit. Rescan at 150–200 DPI instead of 600, or convert photos to JPG at a lower quality before turning them into a PDF. Many government portals in India limit uploads to 1–2 MB, so check the limit first.

Pages are in the wrong order

Arrange the files before merging, or split the result with the Split PDF tab and merge again in the right order.
