Back in May 2023, a fan-made "iPhone 16 Ultra" concept went viral on YouTube. Created by the channel Technizo Concept, it imagined an iPhone with a small second display on the back, bronze accents and split volume buttons. We covered it at the time, and now that the real iPhone 16 lineup has launched, it's interesting to look back at what the concept got right and what it got wrong.

Important: this was never a leak. It was a third-party design concept, not based on information from Apple.

What the iPhone 16 Ultra concept showed

  • A second display on the back, placed beside the triple-camera system, for notifications or using the main cameras as selfie cameras.
  • Bronze-coloured accents around the camera lenses and on the buttons.
  • Flat sides like the iPhone 14 and 15 Pro models.
  • Separate volume buttons on the left and the classic alert slider.
  • Dynamic Island at the top of the front display, with thin, even bezels.
  • USB-C instead of Lightning.

Concept vs reality: what Apple actually launched

Apple announced the iPhone 16 family in September 2024: iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. There was no "Ultra" model.

What the concept got right

  • USB-C: Apple had already switched to USB-C with the iPhone 15 series in 2023, and the iPhone 16 kept it.
  • Dynamic Island: it became standard across the whole iPhone 16 lineup.
  • Flat-sided design: the overall shape stayed very similar.

What it got wrong

  • No rear display. Apple never added a second screen.
  • No alert slider. Apple replaced it with the customizable Action button, first on the iPhone 15 Pro and then on every iPhone 16 model.
  • A new button the concept didn't predict: the iPhone 16 series added Camera Control, a pressure- and touch-sensitive button for launching and adjusting the camera.
  • No "Ultra" name. The top model remained the Pro Max, with a larger 6.9-inch display.

Why concept phones still matter

Concepts like this are fun and show what fans want, but they spread quickly and are often mistaken for leaks. Before believing (or sharing) a "new iPhone design", check whether it comes from Apple, a reliable leak source, or a designer's imagination. When in doubt, wait for Apple's official announcement.
